Things We Like: I Can Change

Every Summer needs an anthem. THAT song which perfectly captures, freezes a moment in one’s life. And for me, Summer is the time of year that’s most memorable. And requires an anthem. This year I felt it would be a tall order. Music right now, popular music, I should be quick to point out, is stale. I read Pitchfork, and precious little resonates. (I want Fugazi to end their hiatus!) But hope arrived via my car’s tinny little speaker’s via a song from LCD Soundsystem, off their new release “This is Happening.” I like James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem. LCD Soundsystem is the stage name of American producer James Murphy, co-founder of record label DFA Records. Murphy’s style is a mix of dance music and punk, along with elements of disco, experimental rock, and other styles. “North American Scum” and “Daft Punk Is Playing In My House” are two terrific singles released by the band in years past; like 2005. But this new song which completely captivated me in the car is a departure. Murphy’s vocals are the best I have heard them. The sincerity of the lyrics, their vulnerability is positively arresting. And while I might be gaining a reputation of “trying to get you to listen to music I like via your computer,” and hey, maybe that’s true, I like suggesting things. Like this song. A new anthem for the Summer of 2010. “I Can Change,” LCD Soundsystem, live as seen on Jool’s Holland’s wonderful UK TV show.
